What Others Are Saying

...a great deal of soul-searching in the writing; I am sure there are many who will find it a valuable tool. The humorous side of the author comes out, sprinkled among the wisdom presented. Well done! It is a book I will positively recommend to others. --- from a reader

the book is excellent – very well written and insightful --- from a chemistry professor

I think you did a fine job of relating a great deal of information in a relatively short chapter (on the Bible)...your chapter provides a great summary of the Bible’s importance in our lives. I also wholeheartedly agree how absolutely essential and reliable the Bible is for us. Again, I just wanted to affirm you and say, “Great job.” --- from a pastor

This book was not exactly what I was expecting when I read the title. It is a bit hard to describe, but I will give it a shot because I thought it was filled with God-inspired insight. Dr. Small has a great talent for writing, with a fluid style laced with humor and interwoven with scripture references. He uses the bible so seamlessly throughout that those who are less familiar with the bible may not even realize in some cases that that they are reading scripture. He includes plenty of annotated bible references, but there are many more that just "show up" in his writing. I found this technique very enjoyable and a testimony to Dr. Smalls firm grounding in the bible.

The theme of the book is Christian living, and Dr. Small uses humorous personal anecdotes, scripture, and the story about the struggles and ultimate "demise" of a small church congregation to discuss subjects like unity, doubt, suffering, marriage, and the bible. In some ways the book seems a bit random in its presentation, but I found it very engaging. It also makes this book readable in one continuous sitting or (like I did) over an extended period of time.

Dr. Small looks at various Christian topics in ways I truly had never considered. For example, of death he says, "For the obedient, death is a return to the country of citizenship, a repatriation of both soul and resurrected body.... Pauls message is clear - to avoid fearing death, the proper response is not to ignore it, deny it or flee from it. Rather, like Paul, the Christian should contemplate it as a means of Gods grace at the end of an obedient life." Death as a means of Gods grace: a new concept to me. His insights on the other fifteen or so topics he discusses are equally good.

"If Church is Easy, Youre Doing It Wrong!" is full of wonderful lessons for any believer. I pray that you will get as much out of it as I did.
